Samuel Benin

Samuel Benin is the Acting Director for Africa in the Development Strategies and Governance Unit. He conducts research on national strategies and public investment for accelerating food systems transformation in Africa and provides analytical support to the African Union’s CAADP Biennial Review.

Distorted Sex-Ratio Plays Havoc with Marriage in China (The Economist)

November 29, 2017


The Economist published a feature examining the impact of a skewed sex ratio on marriages in the Chinese society, leading to high bride prices.  The article referenced Senior Research Fellow Xiaobo Zhang’s research that estimated that half the increase in country’s saving rate between 1990 and 2007 can be attributed to the rising cost of marriage in a society with too many men.
