Eligibility and selection criteria

PhD students from all over the world in any discipline who:

  1. have finished their qualifying examinations and are currently conducting their PhD research (but have not yet submitted their dissertation), and
  2. are conducting research on poverty or hunger are eligible to apply.

Given the nature of this award, applicants should be eager public speakers, willing to contribute to conference deliberations (in English).

Applicants will be selected on the following criteria:

  • The relevance of their research to improving understanding on either (i) the characteristics and dynamics of poverty and hunger, or (ii) interventions and policies that reduce poverty and hunger.
  • Evidence that they are conducting research in an innovative way using methods at the forefront of their field.

To the extent possible, selection will be global with students selected from each of the following areas: (i) China, (ii) East and Central Asia and Oceana (excluding China), (iii) South Asia, (iv) Africa and the Middle East, (v) Latin America and the Caribbean, (vi) North America, and (vii) Europe.
